Nitin Gadkari Rejects Driverless Vehicle in Favor of Job Security

Nitin Gadkari, India’s Road Transport and Highway Minister, says he won’t allow autonomous vehicles in India. Speaking at the Zero Mile Samvad event organized by IIM Nagpur, Nitin Gadkari’s primary concern revolves around the potential unemployment that could arise from such a move, with an estimated 70-80 lakh jobs losses.

This position emerges amidst Tesla’s interest in penetrating the Indian market. Tesla, known for its advanced ‘Auto Pilot’ feature in electric vehicles, has been a topic of interest. However, Gadkari has set a precondition for Tesla’s entry into India: the cars must be built domestically rather than being imported from abroad, particularly China.

Nitin Gadkari’s remarks reflect a careful approach towards embracing technological innovations while considering the socio-economic impact in a densely populated country like India. It’s a strategic balance between fostering technological advancement and safeguarding the livelihoods of millions in the nation.
